📰 News

Podcast: Start Here
Episode: “Mourning Commute: America’s Latest Mass Shooting”
Host: Brad Mielke
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 26 min | 🗓️ 05/27/2021

Another week, another mass shooting in the United States. While this probably is not surprising to most, it is shocking how little change in preventing gun violence has happened in the last years. In other news, President Biden inquires about an investigation of the origin of Covid-19 and Amazon acquires the Hollywood studio MGM.

🗳️ Politics

Podcast: Today, Explained
Episode: “Why Belarus Hijacked a Plane”
Host: Sean Rameswaram
Guests: Amy MacKinnon | Reporter | Foreign Policy & Franak Viačorka | Belarusian Journalist
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 22 min | 🗓️ 05/26/2021

The most unprecedented incident this week was with no doubt the hijacking of Ryanair flight 4978 by the Belarusian government. I was looking into multiple podcasts that break down what happened, the background story and the international response and found this “Today, Explained” episode to be the most informative. As a European citizen it was simply unimaginable that a foreign government could intercept a flight between two EU capitals to arrest an opposition activist, in this case Roman Protasevich.

Podcast: Business Casual
Episode: “How to Go as Viral as the Lil Nas X Satan Shoes”
Host: Alex Lieberman
Guest: Daniel Greenberg | Founding Member & CRO | MSCHF
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 32 min | 🗓️ 05/24/2021

Remember the scandal around the Lil Nas X Satan Shoes that caused a lawsuit from Nike? The company behind it is MSCHF, an art collective that only releases its products in drops, which then go viral instantly. In this “Business Casual” episode,  Daniel Greenberg, founding team member and CRO of MSCHF, talks about how to go viral on purpose, virality as the most effective marketing tool and why all publicity is good publicity for MSCHF. An insightful conversation for anyone interested in marketing, fashion and popular culture.

💬 Culture & Society

Podcast: Making Sense with Sam Harris
Episode: “Corporate Cowardice”
Host: Sam Harris
Guest: Antonio García-Martínez | Former Apple Employee & Author
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 39 min | 🗓️ 05/27/2021

This topic came to my attention when it was briefly mentioned on two other podcasts, which made me curious to find out more. Sam Harris hosts Antonio García-Martínez, an author and tech entrepreneur that made the headlines because of his recent firing at Apple. The episode reveals the story behind his book “Chaos Monkeys” and why this caused a petition by Apple employees years after its publishing. This podcast goes deeper into underlying topics of cancel culture and hypocrisy and captures an overall current sentiment.

🌍 Environment

Podcast: The Climate Pod
Episode: “Preventing Pandemics in a Time of Science Denial and Climate Change”
Hosts: Ty & Brock Benefiel
Guest: Dr. Peter J. Hotez | Scientist & Author
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 1 hr 4 min | 🗓️ 05/26/2021

This “Climate Pod” episode features a lengthy discussion with scientist and author Dr. Peter J. Hotez about how to prevent future pandemics. A major topic of this conversation is vaccine diplomacy and living in a time of anti-science. Furthermore, Dr. Hotez explains the biggest drivers behind the spread of disease, including climate change, extreme poverty, and widespread science denial. A very informative podcast that everyone should listen to!
