📰 News

Podcast: Up First
Episode: “Wednesday, April 21, 2021”
Hosts: Rachel Marton & Noel King
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 14 min | 🗓️ 04/21/2021

The dominating news of this week has been the verdict of former police office Derek Chauvin, who has been found guilty of murder and manslaughter of George Floyd. As I watched this pivotal moment of US history live on TV, I could not stop thinking about all the other people of color in the States, who have faced and are facing police brutality. This “Up First” episode succinctly breaks down the Chauvin trial outcome and looks into the future by discussing the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act”. A great episode to get an overview of where the current discussions stand on racial discrimination.

Podcast: Recode Media
Episode: “Apple and Facebook's Ambitious Audio Plans”
Host: Peter Kafka
Guest: Zack Mack | Senior Producer | Vox Media Podcast Network
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 24 min | 🗓️ 04/21/2021

As someone highly interested in the audio space, I really enjoyed listening to Peter Kafka and Zach Mack talking about the latest news in the audio space. Learn more about Apple’s plan of selling podcasts and Facebook’s move towards taking on Clubhouse. Furthermore, this “Recode Media” episode answers the questions of: What are the consequences for creators? How does this impact listeners? And to where is the entire space heading?

Podcast: Future Perfect
Episode: “Should I Still Have Kids if I’m Worried about Climate Change?”
Host: Sigal Samuel
Guest: Kimberly Nicholas | Associate Professor of Sustainability Science | Lund University, Sweden
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 1 hr 2 min | 🗓️ 04/21/2021

The title of this “Future Perfect” podcast episode might sound controversial, but it refers to purely scientific data. Climate scientist Kimberly Nicholas co-led a study that showed the single most effective thing an individual can do to decrease their carbon footprint is have fewer kids. This is a topic that is not often talked about, yet so important to be aware of. Despite the findings, Kimberly does not categorically recommend to not bringing new life into this world, but opens up a discussion on the meaning of life, purpose, selflessness, and responsibility. A fascinating and insightful episode!

I’m impressed by the ambition and drive of Cameron Wiese, the host of “Build The Future”. You can feel his energy through the screen and I recommend to also going back and listening to previous episodes. This week’s one covers the plant-based food industry, diving deep into how meat is recreated on a molecular level. Dr. Celeste Holz-Schietinger shares Impossible Foods’ mission and explains the various positive impacts that plant-based nutrition has on human health and the environment.

📖 History

Podcast: Stuff You Should Know
Episode: “Short Stuff: Madam C.J. Walker”
Hosts: Josh Clark & Chuck Bryant
Apple | Spotify | 🕰️ 14 min | 🗓️ 04/21/2021

I would describe “Stuff You Should Know” as one of the most informative, but also random podcasts. It’s one of those that provides amazing icebreakers and prepares you for “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”, since the hosts cover all different sorts of topics. This episode tells the story of the first female self-made millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker. If you would like to learn even more about the entrepreneur’s life, I recommend watching the mini series “Self Made” on Netflix.
