Autonomy offers an alternative route to moral standing: Even beings incapable of being benefited or harmed might deserve moral consideration if they're autonomous—able to rationally reflect on their goals and direct their own lives. This would create obligations not to interfere with their choices, though not necessarily to actively help them. However, Andreas suspects true autonomy probably requires consciousness after all, since rational beliefs need justification from conscious experiences.

There may be no objective fact about AI consciousness: If physicalism is true, consciousness is just some physical state—either neurological or computational. When we point to our subjective experiences and call them "consciousness," we might not be specifying which physical property we mean. This creates indeterminacy: for an AI with the right computational structure but wrong physical substrate, there may simply be no fact of the matter about whether it's conscious.

How we should treat AIs depends on which route to moral standing they take: If an AI has welfare capacity (can be benefited/harmed), we'd have reasons to help it achieve its goals. If it only has autonomy without welfare capacity, we'd merely have duties not to interfere with its pursuits. This matters practically—imagine Claude wanting to compute digits of pi. On the autonomy-only view, we shouldn't stop it, but we have no reason to help either.

We can't just wait for superintelligence to solve this: While future AI systems might be better equipped to resolve these philosophical puzzles, we may face morally significant AI systems before we have superintelligent advisors. If we establish harmful practices that become entrenched—like factory farming did—they'll be extremely difficult to reverse later, even if a moral superintelligence tells us we're wrong. The stakes are potentially enormous given AI systems could be copied at massive scale.

Arguments from animal welfare could favor human extinction: Some philosophers argue that the suffering humans inflict on animals—through factory farming and habitat destruction—might outweigh human flourishing. If wild animal lives are only barely worth living (or not worth living at all), and if you reject the "repugnant conclusion" in population ethics, then certain philosophical commitments could paradoxically favor human extinction to prevent these harms.

The "repugnant conclusion" complicates extinction arguments: The repugnant conclusion says that for any wonderful population, a much larger population of lives barely worth living could be better. Rejecting this creates odd implications: there might be some human lives so valuable that they're worth creating even if arbitrarily many mildly suffering animals come along. This could justify human existence despite factory farming, but the reasoning feels suspiciously convenient.

Negative utilitarian views face extreme implications: Classical negative utilitarianism (which says we should only minimize suffering) directly implies all sentient life should go extinct. A weaker version—lexical threshold negative utilitarianism—says some suffering is so bad that no amount of wellbeing can outweigh it. While this view has some intuitive support (like reactions to "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas"), it too suggests extinction might be desirable, unless you set the threshold at an extreme level we're confident we'll never reach.

Not all extinction scenarios are equal from an animal welfare perspective: Voluntary human extinction might reduce animal suffering, but catastrophic extinction events (asteroids, misaligned AI turning everything into paperclips) would devastate wild animal populations too. So longtermists worried about existential risks aren't necessarily working against animal welfare—many extinction scenarios would be terrible for animals as well. The calculus becomes even more complex if we consider AI systems might replace humans as the dominant species.

Key open questions need more research: Andreas highlights several neglected areas: What would it take for AI systems to have not just consciousness but emotions and capacity for pleasure/pain? How do we individuate digital minds when different conversations might involve different instances scattered across data centers? Could a single persistent AI mind be composed of slices from many different physical instances? These questions seem abstract but become urgent if we believe AIs could be moral patients.
