Podcast’s Essential Bites:

[3:09] AR: “Bottled water and tap water follow almost identical regulations. The only thing is lead. Bottled water has a little bit lower of a standard for lead. And that's just because […] [it] isn't passing through infrastructure in the same way that tap water is. Other than that, they're absolutely identical. The FDA regulates bottled water, [the] EPA regulates tap water.”

[3:59] CL: “Where [bottled] water comes from is […] usually the same as where your tap water is coming from. [Bottled water companies] market it differently. They talk about pristine, underground sources - that's the aquifer, the same place that your tap water is coming from. […] And then they use the term spring water. That's basically either surface water or well water that's kept from the aquifer. Either way it sounds good, but it really isn't any different.”

[9:33] AR: “There was a report […] a few years ago, that tested water brands, both still and carbonated. The whole purpose of this study was to see if PFAS were present in any of the brands. […] And so PFAS were in fact present in a lot of these brands that were tested. […] If you're using bottled water as an alternative to tap water, those are things that you want to be considering and thinking about.”

[14:33] AR: “25 to 45% of bottled water actually comes from municipal sources, so tap water. […] 91% of plastic isn’t recycled. That means that a lot of these single use plastic water bottles are just going into landfills, going into the ocean, polluting the environment. […] It can take over 400 years for one single use bottled water to fully decompose in the environment.”

[15:23] CL: “When the plastic decomposes, it forms microplastics. And that is so ubiquitous in the environment, it's in our air, it's in our water, it's in our food. And a study in Australia recently estimated that people are consuming about five grams of plastic every week. So we're eating the equivalent of a credit card every week in plastic.
